Deaf Community

Without Deaf people, British Sign Language and Deaf Culture, Becoming Visible would not exist. We live and breathe Deaf people and it is the very core of our heart.

Our services that we provide – the BSL Translation & Interpreting Service, Training, Youth, Deaf ID services all directly and indirectly benefit Deaf & hearing people and provides the income we need to generate the work we do within the community.

Coffee mornings

We run a weekly coffee morning session. The aim of the coffee morning is for people to drop in, have a natter, catch up on news, share concerns. It has become a lifeline for many people preventing isolation, being able to access information in their language and an opportunity to create a support system. Everyone is welcome.

Art & Crafts

The monthly Art & Craft session lasts 2-3 hours and is designed so that people can bring long their own projects to do or join a new activity to learn new skills. It enables Deaf people to be creative without having to worry about access in their language. Very often, the participants use the time to have a chat as well as sample some cakes! Everyone is welcome.

Trips

We are quite well known for our trips, both within the North East, UK and overseas. Trips usually have a theme and is associated with Deaf culture/ History. We have visited Dublin, Edinburgh, Warrington, Manchester and other places, including local places of interest such as Beamish, Cragside, Bamburgh & Seahouses. If you are interested, please look at our What’s On page and check out our social media sites.

Speaker & Consultation Events

Information is Power. Knowledge is Power and becoming Visible strongly advocates this. We organise various speaker sessions to ensure that Deaf people have access to information and are able to make informed choices. Sessions are run on an ad-hoc basis and we often get asked to host consultation events for our partners as well as run information sessions. Information about this can be found in our What’s On page as well as social media.
