Becoming Visible (BV) was set up in 2002 – the culmination of a collaboration between Deaf individuals and organisations during the NewcastleGateshead bid to be Capital of Culture 2008. Although NewcastleGateshead was pipped at the post, such was the enthusiasm for the project that, a group of inspired Deaf individuals decided to set up a new Deaf led charity and named it Becoming Visible.
The reason behind the name of our organisation is that Deaf people’s lives, skills, experiences, history and the community is usually invisible to the wider community. The original ethos of respect for British Sign Language and Deaf culture continues to underpin the work that we do today to ensure that Deaf people is visible in all spheres of society.
