Becoming Visible (BV) was set up in 2002 – the culmination of a collaboration between Deaf individuals and organisations during the NewcastleGateshead bid to be Capital of Culture 2008. Although NewcastleGateshead was pipped at the post, such was the enthusiasm for the project that, a group of inspired Deaf individuals decided to set up a new Deaf led charity and named it Becoming Visible.
BV’s Director, Dawn Marshall, was there at the beginning along with several of our current Trustees. The charity has developed year on year from those early days and now operates throughout the UK as well as internationally.
The original ethos of respect for British Sign Language and Deaf culture continues to underpin the work that we do today.
